"Over The Top" Is How They Do TV In The Future.
Cable and Satellite TV are giants in the TV industry. Tons of channels, all sorts of equipment from which to choose, lots of packages, priced all over the place. And they're great, if you're into that sort of thing.
If you prefer a more a la carte approach to TV viewing, however, streaming TV might be just your thing.
Streaming TV, also called OTT, or "Over The Top," has become a viable--and attractive--alternative to the "channel package" format offered by pay TV services. Most of us now have wireless internet ("Wi-Fi") in our homes, which we use to do Facebook, play Words With Friends, and check our emails on the couch. Did you know that that same Wi-Fi connection can bring you thousands of movies and television shows without a subscription to cable or satellite TV? Imagine watching entire seasons of your favorite shows whenever you feel like it, and commercial free!
Here's the equation: Wireless Network + Streaming Device + Streaming Service = A Virtual, Searchable, Movie and Video Library!
You already have the wireless network. Just a few more steps, and wow.
Streaming Devices are any components that can access your wireless network and display on your television. Some examples are: Blu-ray player with built-in "Wi-Fi," Roku, Amazon Fire TV, Wii, Tivo, Xbox 360, Apple TV, Google Chrome, and Smart TVs.
Streaming Services are any services that allow access to viewing or listening content, either for free or through a subscription. Some examples are: Netflix, Hulu Plus, Amazon, YouTube, Pandora, Sling TV, HBO Now, Crackle, Vudu, PopcornFlix, FOX News, and there are many, many more.
People say, "Are they ever going to allow us to pick just the channels we want?" Folks, that's begun! There are streaming services now (Sling TV and DirecTV Now) that offer you small packages of popular channels (including ESPN, EXPN2, AMC, Food, History, A&E, IFC, Disney, Cartoon Network, Lifetime, TBS, and ABC Family), and allow you to add little blocks of other channels, without a monthly subscription.
Others ask, "Will I ever be able to search for just the shows I like?" Will you ever? Some of the streaming devices out there have what's called "cross platform search" features. This means, when you do a search for a program, the device will present a list of services that are carrying it. Over The Top is like having a video library that doesn't take up any shelf space. It's like browsing a video store without ever leaving your living room! This has got to be how they watch TV in the future!
